Chapter 8

The Serpent’s Teeth

Smelling the salty sea air, feeling the breeze, and experiencing the slow rhythmic pulse of each wave as the rolling swells undulated up and down, lifting and then lowering the ship at its will forced Braak to hold on to the side of hull. He had never experienced this feeling before, and his stomach was telling him to either stop surging up and down or it would regurgitate its entire content into fresh air! It took less than a third of a quar for Braak to lose this dispute with his stomach; breakfast, plus the previous days meals were launched into the salty sea! Braak’s face was pale and miserable as he vomited involuntarily over the side of the large floating vessel. Isha on the other hand was in her element; she had been born on the sea, and had lived most of her life on the waves. She immersed herself in the breeze, rode eagerly with each large swell, and absorbed the sea air with enthusiasm and anticipation.

After clearing the docks, maneuvering between the many boats, yachts, ships, and other crafts, and then finally breaking out into the wide expanse of a more solitary sea, the captain of the vessel made his way and approached Braak.

“Well… it would seem that the sea has introduced herself to you in not such a friendly fashion. Never mind, maybe she will become a little more sociable when we clear sight of Avola,” said the captain with a big grin on his face.

He was a stoutly looking man, with little or no hair, wearing a reddish headscarf, loose-fitting sandy-colored shirt, knee-length brown pants, and no shoes. In fact none of the other four men and one woman wore shoes, and the others were similarly dressed in loose-fitting shirts and knee-length pant. The woman, who was probably in her early twenties, wore a blouse, skirt, and a dark blue apron, which covered a large bulge.

“My name is Buri. I am known as Captain Buri Ram. And you are…?”

Braak, with great effort, managed to remove his head from hanging over the side of the hull and turned to look at the fiftyish-year-old grinning face.

“I am Braak, and this is my young companion Isha, and this is my faithful canine… Wolf.” Wolf began to growl and the captain’s grin began to evaporate.

“I do not believe in having beasts on-board my ship, but your ‘silver-haired’ friend paid me well… so I was converted. I became a little more flexible and relented. But you must place it at the front of the deck, as far away from my crew as possible. I don’t want it to give my crew any problems in running this ship. Is this clear…? You must keep it away. I will hold you responsible if it causes any problems, and if it does cause problems I will throw it overboard… Is this clear?”

Braak, incapable of arguing or giving his piece-of-mind to the captain, just nodded his head, faced the sea, and continued retching.
